Braune Korund ist ein Produkt, das durch schrittweise Schmelzreduktion von kalziniertem Bauxit in einem Lichtbogenofen bei hohen Temperaturen (ca. 2000 Grad Celsius) hergestellt wird. Seine chemische Zusammensetzung besteht hauptsächlich aus Al2O3 ( 94,5-97 % ) und Restmengen von TiO2 , SiO2 , Fe2O3 , CaO und MgO .
Braunes Aluminiumoxid zeichnet sich durch gute Zähigkeit, hohe mechanische Festigkeit und Härte (9 auf der Mohs-Skala) aus. Die Mikrohärte des Materials erreicht ca. 1900 kG/mm² . Das spezifische Gewicht (Dichte) beträgt 3,90 +/-0,05 g/cm³ . Die Schüttdichte beträgt je nach Größe 1,52-1,87 g/cm³ . Es hat eine relativ hohe Wärmeleitfähigkeit und geringe Wärmeausdehnung. In Bezug auf Elektrizität ist es ein Isolator.

Braune Pulver aus geschmolzenem Aluminiumoxid sind das perfekte Material, das speziell für allgemeine Schleifanwendungen in gebundenen Schleifwerkzeugen sowie Läpp- und Polierprozessen hergestellt wird. Obwohl Aluminiumoxid eine geringere Härte und Schleifleistung als Diamant, Borkarbid und Siliziumkarbid aufweist, wird es häufig zum Schleifen von Eisenmaterialien, zur Endbearbeitung zäher und harter Materialien und zum Füllen von Keramikteilen verwendet, wenn die Verarbeitungskosten wichtig sind.
